Hi, this video seems to address exactly what i need to do. however, i don't seem to see the "data tools" option in the choose editor for the SSIS customized code - do i need any pre-requisites for this to work?

You can setup Data Tools as a Custom Editor in General Settings.
awesome! that worked perfectly!! now to just get the list to show up.. any idea why i might be getting this error - i get this when i try to browse the listdata.svc/ListName.

That is a good question that I unfortunately are unable to give you an exact answer to.
It could be that a duplicate fieldname exists due to some white-space removals - see here: https://nearbaseline.com/2014/09/odata-error-processing-this-request/
