Hi,

I am working with TimeXtender and have an SSAS tabular on-premise on a virtual machine as the endpoint. I want to publish my Power BI dashboard to the Power BI service. However, when I attempt to publish, I receive a message indicating that the connection to the data source is broken. How can I resolve this issue? We do not have Power BI Premium licenses, hence the use of SSAS.

Looking forward to your response.

Best regards,

Dean

Do you have the Power BI On Premise Data Gateway installed on the on-premise network?

I haven't installed the On-premises Data Gateway yet. Can you still connect to it? Will I be able to see the model in Power BI?

Without the gateway the Power BI service is unable to connect to your SQL server.

Not sure what exactly you're asking, so I would advise getting some help if you're not clear on how to go about setting up the gateway.

You definitely want to avoid doing it in the wrong way and having an unreliable gateway interrupt your reports in the service.

For more info, take a look at the documentation from Microsoft, for example this guide and here is how to set up the SSAS connection.

Good luck!

Hi,

as the Power BI service runs as a SaaS solution on the public internet it cannot reach your on-prem databases. This is one of the reasons for using an On-premises Data Gateway: to allow Power BI to connect to resources on an internal network.

If you do not have a gateway, you will only be able to connect to your source from Power BI desktop as that can run inside your local network. Note that gateways need to run inside your network and also be registered in Power BI services, so it can take a bit of planning to set up in a way that does not result in issues. A common problem is if the password of an account the gateway is registered under expires, this will block reloading.

If you run a gateway to connect to SSAS, you will need to change the settings on your SSAS instance to always use the gateway.
