I have a client that wants to explore a significant rework of their Prepare instance. They want to duplicate their existing Prepare instance in Dev to create a sandbox instance. Is there a recommended approach to achieve this? They are using version 6898.1

Hi, I would advise to use a template/ blueprint.

If they are staying inside their own setup, i.e. they are not asking you to do the experimenting in your own deployment, you should be able to clone the Prepare. You might need to consider what that means for the load on the Ingest that would need to transfer data to an extra instance. If they are on the Premium license, they have explicit Sandbox environments that could be used.

If you are wanting to use the original Prepare as a template for testing elsewhere, Blueprints would be the way to go as Devin suggests.
