In 2023 a group of waste disposal/recycling companies looked for a way to expand their reporting capabilities. Different options where evaluated and after settling for Power BI as their new reporting tool, they decided to also build a datawarehouse. The subsidiaries (<15) where almost all using the same ERP and accounting systems, all based on MS SQL databases. IT resources where scarce and it was clear from the beginning, that the main developer would be the Head of Controlling of the group. The main other option that was considerd was the use of open source software. That would mainly save on the licensing cost but would also give full transparency on the tool. On the other hand it would be hard to get "vendor" support for the productive systems. It was also questioned how future prove an open source solution would be, and how easy and quick one could get a fix if potential security problem arose in the code.
Two main advantages of TimeXTender made the difference in the end: The low-code/No-Code approach as well as the Power BI Integration. As it was clear that no new resources would be hired/trained in the company it was decided that the most important features of the solution were ease of use, stability and reliability.
After the decision for TimeXTender had been made the project Kick-Off was in September 2023 and within 9 weeks the PoC was successfully made and the first reports were usable by the companies. Within 6 months almost all subsidiaries were integrated in the common data pool. Meanwhile the systems of over 15 subsidiaries are connected via the ODX. Several semantic models are used to serve Power BI apps and especially the features like centralized Security Rules and measures prove to be extremly valuable.
The ease of use of the user interface allows the local developers to easily integrate new data sources and expand on the existing data models.
The MDW combines the data of the main ERP as well as the main accounting systems and allows the reports to be created and refreshed much faster than before.
After an initial co-development with the main developer a bi-weekly coaching session for complicated was implemented to maintain and improve the solution.
Overall the project and solution are seen as a full success by everyone.
